JOURNEYS AND JOURNALS

The photographs were made on two journeys separated by many years. The selected images are also sequential narratives or journals which record some of the flavour of these journeys

SAILING TO CANADA

In 2005 I travelled to Canada following the sea route taken by child migrants in the 19th century. This was also a journey taken by my birth mother in the 1950s.

OVERLAND TO INDIA

I traveled overland to India when I was a student and recently rediscovered the negatives which had never been printed. This journey is now impossible to replicate.

PROSPERITY STREET

Prosperity Street was in an area of terraces and back to backs in Leeds. I was brought up in a working-class environment in the South but had never seen the amount of deprivation in the North. The warmth and humour of people contrasted with a very challenging environment.
