MARINERS AND MIGRANTS: IN SEARCH OF HOME

'Mariners and Migrants: in Search of Home' comprises two installations 'Sent to Seaand 'Hrimceald Sae'.

They are based on research into 19th-century child migrants and young sailors who sailed the transatlantic route between Great Britain and Canada.

They were produced during a year-long artist's residency at the National Maritime Museum when I had extensive access to their archives. This was supplemented by material gathered during a journey to Canada. I sailed by container ship to Montreal and eventually reached Hearts Content in Newfoundland.

The project was made possible through a Winston Churchill traveling fellowship, the Arts Council, and Leverhulme artist-in-residence awards.
